The Rashu Expo, an event aimed at promoting local tourism and the rich island culture and traditions of the Maldives, began on Thursday at Central Park in Hulhumale. Organized by The Travel Guys, a marketing and PR firm dedicated to advancing the country's tourism, the event is set to run from February 13 to 15. The expo highlights the importance of local tourism, drawing attention to the unique offerings of the islands.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, who officially launched the event. In his speech, Minister Saeed emphasized that the Rashu Expo holds a special place in the government's priorities under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. He stressed the administration's strong support for small and medium-sized enterprises, which the event aims to uplift. "This event is of high importance to the President, and I am here at his direct request, as the President’s Office firmly backs this initiative. This shows the President’s dedication to acknowledging the hard work of small and medium businesses," Saeed remarked.
The Minister further highlighted the crucial role of marketing the individual attractions of the islands to enhance local tourism. He pointed out that each island has unique environmental and cultural aspects, such as wetlands, heritage sites, and unrecognized natural attractions, which, if effectively promoted, can serve as powerful tourism assets. Saeed also underscored the importance of improving accessibility to these islands, stressing the need for convenient travel and transport options for tourists.
Additionally, the Minister discussed the potential of the Maldives' embassies around the world in promoting both the islands and local businesses. He noted that these diplomatic missions can play an instrumental role in spreading awareness of the Maldives' tourism offerings and forging collaborations to boost the sector.
Minister Saeed also touched upon the benefits of the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement, particularly for new guesthouse businesses. The agreement has resulted in a significant reduction in the import duty for materials such as construction supplies and furniture, which previously ranged from 5 to 10 percent but are now duty-free for these businesses.
The Rashu Expo features more than 50 stalls, representing a diverse range of island councils, guesthouses, resorts, and small and medium enterprises. Participants from over 25 islands have gathered to showcase the cultural heritage, local crafts, and traditional cuisine of their communities. Attendees at the expo also have the opportunity to learn about the various services and business opportunities available. One participant expressed their enthusiasm, saying, "We want to highlight the uniqueness of our islands, share our traditional cuisine, and contribute to the growth of local tourism."
Through events like the Rashu Expo, the Maldives is striving to foster a deeper connection between tourists and the islands, showcasing the authentic cultural experiences that each island offers.
